The magnesium reality check

Your magnesium has a secret. Ours doesn't.

Most "premium" bisglycinate is quietly buffered with cheap magnesium oxide. Ours never is — just 100% Albion TRAACS® chelate: 121 mg of elemental magnesium across an honest two-capsule serving. Launch week: 10% off on Amazon.ca — clip at checkout.

The bisglycinate math

A capsule can only hold so much.

This is the math that gives a buffered magnesium away. Three numbers. No chemistry degree required.

14.1%

of bisglycinate is elemental magnesium

Real magnesium bisglycinate is only about 14% elemental by weight — the rest is glycine. So an honest dose needs a lot of chelate.

735 mg

fits in a size-00 capsule

A size-00 veggie capsule — the largest most brands use — holds roughly 735 mg of powder, before fillers and flow agents.

= oxide

when the math doesn't add up

If a small capsule claims a big elemental number "from bisglycinate," the chelate alone can't fit — so the gap gets filled with cheap magnesium oxide.

Reality Check tool · no email required

Check the bottle in your cupboard.

Plug in the numbers from any magnesium bottle you own. We'll flag whether the math works — or whether it's hiding oxide. The logic is open below the verdict; audit it yourself.

Capsule capacities are approximate and the math assumes a pure chelate with minimal fillers. It’s a transparency check you can run yourself — not a lab assay.

Not all magnesium is the same

Three forms. One honest pick.

We'll be fair to every form — including the ones we don't sell. Then you decide.

~4%

Magnesium oxide

Cheap and heavy. Only about 4% absorbs (Firoz & Graber, 2001), so most of the big number on the label never gets taken up — and at higher doses it's better known as a laxative.

Well absorbed*

Magnesium citrate

Genuinely well-absorbed — no knock there. The catch is the osmotic pull: citrate draws water into the gut, so your comfortable dose is capped before it loosens stools. Better for occasional regularity than a daily habit.

Daily driver

Magnesium bisglycinate

Absorbs about as well as citrate and tends to be the gentlest of the three. It's bonded to glycine, which research suggests may play a role in sleep and calm. Not a sleep aid at a daily dose — but the carrier isn't dead weight.

We don't name competitors — run any bottle through the Reality Check above and read its label. The math speaks for itself.

Flip your bottle. Three checks.

01

Read the medicinal ingredients

If magnesium oxide is listed next to the bisglycinate, you're holding a buffered blend — the cheap oxide is padding the number.

02

Check the per-capsule claim

A small capsule claiming 150 mg+ elemental "from bisglycinate" can't add up. Run it through the calculator above.

03

Read the non-medicinal list too

Oxide sometimes hides further down. If it's in the bottle at all, ask why a "bisglycinate" needs it.

Freshfield Magnesium label: 60.5 mg per capsule as Albion 100% magnesium bisglycinate chelate (TRAACS); non-medicinal: cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate

Our actual label — 60.5 mg from 100% TRAACS chelate. Nothing buried.

What "unbuffered" actually means

Unbuffered

No magnesium oxide. The elemental magnesium on our label comes entirely from chelated bisglycinate.

TRAACS®-certified

Albion's TRAACS bisglycinate — the chelated mineral form with documented absorption data.

Full disclosure

Everything in the bottle is on the label — cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate. Nothing hidden.

Certified plastic negative — our bottles are made from sugarcane, built to break down, not last forever. Manufactured to ISO 15378, ISO 9001, GMP and European Pharmacopeia standards.

One active ingredient

100% Albion TRAACS magnesium bisglycinate chelate — no magnesium oxide or proprietary blend.

Not a fit if:

  • You want one giant capsule. Our honest dose is two smaller vegan caps, once a day.
  • You only need 50–100 mg of elemental magnesium a day. Plenty of lower-dose options are fine.
  • You shop purely on lowest price per bottle. Buffered products are cheaper — we'd rather be honest about why.
  • You mainly want occasional regularity support. That's what citrate's osmotic pull is for — bisglycinate is the gentler daily driver.
